Bewitching the Duke by Christie Kelley

Colin Barrett, Duke of Northrop, is forced to return to his country home and attend some matters so all is ready for a upcoming wedding.  He has avoided the place for eight years following the death of his child and wife due to, he believes, the ineptness of the local healer.  So when he awakens to the healers daughter cleansing his home, he is irate...but the sassy lady captures his attention.  Has she no sense of propriety?  Women wear their hair bound, not loose around their shoulders.  They wear shoes and don't let the toes peak out and they do not show off their calves at the lake.  Having Selina White on his lands causes him to much pain as every time he sees her he is reminded of all he has lost due to her healing ways.  He finally orders her off his lands but Selina takes her wise woman ways very seriously and will not abandon all the tenants when they need her as the local doctor is normally drunk and unreliable.  With a crazy plan created with the help of the servants, who adore her, she stays put but the arrival of Colin's family causes Selina and Colin to spend more time together.  As love and passion bloom, can Colin let go of the past and find a bright new future, especially after Selina reveals a long kept secret?

This was my first Christie Kelley book and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I will be exploring her backlist!  The sparks fly immediately between the willful Selina and the reserved Colin and I loved watching them fall for each other.  Colin is very bitter about his wife and childs death and feels that a proper doctor would have been able to help them and they would still be alive so he is torn about the new feelings he is having for Selina, the first since his wife died.  Selina slowly finds a place in his heart and life by showing him the value of his tenants, whom he has basically ignored all these years, and also showing a stronger feeling of love that he ever felt for his wife...which also scares him.  The plan created by the servants is a bit silly and I find it hard to believe that Colin did not figure it out but it did not overwhelm the storyline, thankfully.  The addition of his sister and stepmother and a nice sense of family and I loved how they reacted to Selina, it was a refreshing change of pace about the differences in class.  I thought I had guessed the secret that Selina was hiding but I was a bit off so that was nice.  Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I hope we get to see some more stories with the other healers introduced!  A fun, sexy, heart warming, smart, sassy, intriguing read!  4 stars

New Covers

Another lovely batch of new covers from out and about lately!

Jillian Hunter continues her her Boscastle Affair series with The Mistress Memoirs, out March 5th.  I love the attention to detail!  I have yet to read anything by this author but did pick up the first books (because I loved that cover as well) so I hope to be caught up by March in time to pick this one up!

Sweet Madness is book three from Heather Snow and another author I need to read as I have picked up the two previous books!  Argh, lol!  I really like this cover as well!  The blurb says the heroine studies maladies of the mind!  How interesting does that sound?  Look for it April 2nd.

This novella was originally published in an anthology which is no longer being sold so the authors are releasing them separately.   The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright was a delight to read and I urge you to to read it if you have not at only 99 cents!  Such a lovely pink cover!!

Ooh, what a lovely, stormy cover!  Scandal in the Night is book three in the Reckless Brides series and will be out June 25th.

Amanda Forester is a new to me author and A Wedding in Springtime looks to be her first straight Regency novel (her previous look to be Highlander stories).  It sounds fun and I will be grabbing it on its May 7th release.  I think the cover is very lovely and sweet and sexy at the same time!

I just read Pamela Sherwood's debut and I am eager for her next story, A Song at Twilight. I again love the attention to the background detail and the pretty shade of purple.  Look for this one August or October (different dates on goodreads and Amazon).

Well, will any of these be added to your list for the coming year?  I was hoping to get caught up on my mountain but I keep adding to my list for the new year of books I want to read. . . :)

Happy Release Day!!

Here are some recent releases to have on your radar. . .

Waltz with a Stranger by Pamela Sherwood

Aurelia Newbold stays on the outskirts of society following an accident that left her scarred and crippled.  Instead, she lets all the attention focus on her perfectly lovely twin sister but when a mysterious man waltzes with her one night in the gardens, she starts to realize she might be worth something as she is.  This belief is cemented even more following a trip to Paris which restores her mentally and helps her physically.  Anxious to be back in London and with her sister, she is shocked to learn that Amy is engaged and disappointed when the man turns out to be her waltz partner.  James has newly inherited an earldom which he never expected to inherit and it is in dire need of funds so he proposes to Amy, a wealthy American and all seems fine until he sees Aurelia again and the attraction still burns between them.  With neither of them willing to hurt Amy, whom they both care for, they seem destined to be apart.  However some matters from the previous earl's past arrive in threatening letters and a persistent ship man and James finds himself confiding in Aurelia.  As they attempt to solve the questions lurking, will they be able to in time and find a way to be together, without hurting anyone?

This was an enjoyable, pleasant debut that is a bit on the sweet side.  I enjoyed watching Aurelia find the strength within herself following her accident, that her scars do not define her.  She was sweet, strong and sensible.  James was a perfect gentleman who I wish would have just waited for the sister who held his heart after just one dance but he thought her too timid and shy at the time so I guess I understand. . . We also get to see a lot of Amy and her feelings about her upcoming marriage and her new feelings for James' friend.  There is a wonderful sense of family and I really enjoyed their little bits they added and am excited for their stories to be told.  The mystery aspect wasn't bad and adds a bit of drama near the end but overall the book felt a little long.  As James is engaged and Aurelia refuses to betray her sister, not much happens on the romance front in the first half of the book and I would have liked a little bit more to happen sooner for my taste.  The writing is well done and smooth with lovely attention to detail and I will defiantly check out future works of Pamela Sherwood even though this one was a little slow for me.  Recommended for fans of a sweet romance with memorable secondary characters with just a dash of intrigue.  3 1/2 stars

When the Duke Found Love by Isabella Bradford

Lady Diana is the youngest of her three sisters and it has come time for her to marry, especially since she has had a few indiscretions already but since her sisters are duchesses she is hanging on to her respectability.   Through some persuasion from her sisters and mother, she agrees to a marriage to a man she doesn't know.  After all, the arranged marriages for her sisters worked out wonderfully so it can happen again, right?  Wrong.  Her intended is a dreadful bore and not suited for her at all.  And to complicate matters, she runs into the most dashing man at the park...a man that sparks her interest and he is just as intrigued by her.  The Duke of Sheffield is no stranger to gossip himself and needs to marry a respectable young lady quickly to avoid the kings wrath and he finds himself engaged to a passable lady.  Unfortunately she is in love with another and all of Sheffield's thoughts are consumed with Diana.  Will Diana and Sheffield do what is proper of them or will the do one last daring, risky endeavor for true love?

Overall not a bad conclusion to a fun, yet somewhat predictable, series.  I enjoyed Diana and her zest for life but I did feel she bent to the rules her mother and sisters wanted her to follow rather quickly.  I thought there might have been more conflict with her but there was not anything major.  Sheffield was a joy to read.  Yes he has rakish tendencies but underneath he has a heart of gold.  I liked his manner with dealing with his fiance and I thought his dog added a wonderful sense of humor.  Paired with Diana's love for her cat, the animals are a great secondary act.  The attention to details through fashion and the surroundings was great and something I always appreciate and enjoy.  The love blooms fast between Sheffield and Diana but they find it hard to find some time alone but I appreciated how truthful they were with everything.  So while nothing major happens, which is a nice change of pace sometimes, this is a nice comfort read with love, laughter and family.  3 1/2 stars

How to Deceive a Duke by Lecia Cornwall

Lady Marguerite Lynton is doing whatever it takes to protect her family from the poor house and when a duchess appears and asks her older sister to marry her grandson, the notorious Devil Duke of Temberlay, she feels like their fate in life is finally changing since her fathers sudden death.  But her sister is not strong enough to deal the the devil and runs away and Meg does what she feels she must do...she marries the duke instead.  After all, it is his fault he does not know the difference between her sister, a beauty, and herself, not a beauty according to her family.  However, when Nicholas finds out the truth he is livid.  He is already disgusted with having to marry at all, but he needs his grandmothers funds after his brothers death.  He never expected to inherit a dukedom and had no training for it and does not want to shoulder all the responsibility it entails now, instead going to war and he has no desire to be with a woman that can be bought so easily and plans to treat her with little respect.  However, after the truth is revealed, he finds himself falling for this fiery, strong beauty who seemed to be overlook by her whole family.  Yet he can not express his feelings and it does not help that Meg constantly sees the worst in him at all times.  Nicholas takes a drastic measure that shakes the foundation of their shaky marriage and may cost them both everything. . .

I thought this was a wonderful book!  I loved Meg.  She is bold, confident, fiercely protective, smart and sassy and a great balance to Nicholas who comes across rude, arrogant and selfish but underneath that layer he is smart, sexy and also protective.  Together they make a good couple but they both lack the art of communication a bit and trust is a huge issue between them that needs to be overcome.  I loved watching the sparks fly between Meg and Nicholas and how they were trying to deal with their feelings without hurting themselves in the process.  The added presence of the grandmother, who is determined to have an heir, adds more problems.  I do wish Meg had had more faith in herself but having grown up with a father that believed ladies are to add to their husbands value and that she was the ugly one amongst her fair sisters made it hard for to see her true beauty, inside and out.  I also did not really care for the way the ending played out as I felt Nicholas behaved a little selfishly and there was really no explanation or apology for it.  Overall though, I flew through this and found myself laughing, sighing, smiling and thoroughly entertained.  4 stars

The Secret Life of Lady Lucinda by Sophie Barnes

Lord William Summersby has decided to marry a nice, quiet young lady, one that is proper enough for a future earl and will provide the requisite heir.  So when he suddenly finds himself engaged to one bold Lucy Blackwell, a woman he doesn't even know until they share a dance, he knows his duty and will marry Lucy but will not be happy about it!  The only thing he asks of her is to have no secrets... Lucy has her own reasons for trapping William into marriage.  She needs the former spy to help her find her parents murderer but she knows he does not trust her, nor does she blame him for this fact, and she finds it hard to try and build a new relationship while keeping her true life secret.  When it becomes clear that the murderer has found her after all these years and takes drastic steps to ensure her silence, William notices the cracks in her composure and pressures her for the answers.  Can Lucy find a way to tell the truth while protecting all those threatened?  Will William be able to forgive another lie and find a way to protect the woman that is slowly becoming so important to his life?

I have enjoyed all of Sophie Barnes novels and this one is no exception!  The beginning will grab you and then the craziness of Lucy's plan will keep you turning the pages and watching Lucy and William attempt to find some common ground in their very unconventional marriage was a delight to read.  Seeing the horror of Lucy's past first helps you get a better understanding of her reasons to need William's help, since the plan is bold and crazy and thankfully, the family stands by her even though they distrust her initially.  William is strong, proud and underneath the gruff, caring and protective.  I liked the twist of her past catching up to her in England instead of in Constantinople.  However, when the story does travel abroad it adds quite a bit of drama and tense moments but also felt a bit over the top.  I think for me, it was just a little too much coupled with the way Lucy and William got betrothed.  I liked how Lucy and William formed a bond before anything happened in the bedroom and I liked watching them slowly fall for each other.  I also liked the strong family bond and watching the relationships change and grow stronger among them as well.  Overall, an action-packed, crazy, fun romance that will sweep you away.  3 1/2 stars

The Importance of Being Wicked by Miranda Neville

Caroline Townsend is dealing with the death of her husband and trying to find a way to pay all the debts left behind and with her generous nature, she finds it hard to turn away her late husbands artistic, struggling friends.  A bright spot is the arrival of her dear cousin, Anne who is coming to meet her potential fiance, Thomas, Duke of Castleton.  It quickly becomes clear that this proper man, or Lord Stuffy as Caro comes to call him, will not suit for Anne and does not fit in with Caro's more carefree lifestyle...but the attraction between Thomas and Caro is there and hard to ignore.  When Caro attempts to settle on of her larger debts, Thomas is there to sweep her away and this forces a change in their relationship.  However, Thomas needs to marry for money so how can he throw away the chance to marry for money (Anne) for the chance to marry for love and passion (Caro)?  Will he choose duty or love?  Will Caro be able to find a balance for her feelings for Thomas, a balance between proper and free?

What a fun, sexy, enjoyable easy read!  I really like to read a good book sometimes without major conflict, without loads of action and with feelings expressed without having to pull teeth and I felt Miranda Neville delivered with this one.  Caro is a delight...free spirited, kind, loving and a wonderful teacher to Thomas about all things wicked!  Thomas is the perfect, proper, stuffy gentleman who knows his duty but can see importance to learning all things wicked.  I did feel like the story was a bit slow in the beginning but it really picked up for me half way through and I finished it in one sitting to see how it all played out. I think the reason it was a bit slow for me was all the other characters are introduced for the upcoming stories and it detracted from the romance blooming a bit.  However, by the end I loved how the author weaved in just enough tidbits about the upcoming stories that I am very anxious for them now as they all look quite scandalous!  I enjoyed watching Thomas go through a slew of emotions of his feelings for Caro but how he never backed down once he made up his mind, even when some secrets from his mothers past is revealed.  Caro also stayed true to her feelings once she realized them and this was a nice surprise for me as I was worried she would be a bit flighty in that regard.  And even though this is a very easy read, there is a touch of heartbreak that had me heart sinking that adds just a bit of drama.  Art collecting isn't really my interest but it was touched just enough on without overwhelming the storyline.  Overall, a smashing start to a new series that I thoroughly enjoyed.  4 stars

There's Something About Lady Mary by Sophie Barnes

Mary Croyden grew up with her father, a surgeon, learning all she could from him and is devastated by his death but she is even more stunned by all the secrets he was hiding.  Her father was an earl and never told her, instead choosing to live his life quietly providing medical care.  He made provisions for Mary though in the form of passing his title on to her, along with a fortune, so now Mary finds herself a lady and in the unfamiliar waters of the ton.  Always feeling plain her whole life, she is pleased when a handsome man takes an interest in her and she knows she needs to tell Ryan Summersby about her illegal profession.  However, just as things are heating up, the truth about his interest in her is revealed and Mary is left feeling hurt.  Ryan tries to redeem his blunder and then he learns the full truth about Mary and he has a hard time grasping what she does.  With someone out to steal Mary's fathers journals, with no regards to her life, can Mary and Ryan uncover the secrets that they hold?  Will Ryan be able to come to terms with Mary's daring lifestyle and find a way that they can be happy together?

This was a very enjoyable, fun tale!  I really enjoyed Mary and her determination to do the right thing, not matter what the cost.  Being a female surgeon is highly illegal but she still considers the life of the patient first over her own safety.  I liked seeing a bit about the medical profession without being overwhelmed in the process...it also made me very glad we live in modern times with regards to a simple procedure that just wasn't really done at the time!  Mary is bold, sharp and has quick comebacks for Ryan.  Ryan is just the sort of man you love--kind, smart and generous.  Yet when it comes to Mary, he is a bit of a numskull.  He has no problems with his daring, unique sister but when some of the same characteristics are shown in Mary, he is unable to accept them and it takes a series of missteps to realize the depth of his feelings for her.  I also enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story, I really did not know who the final villain was (in part due to the fact there were quite a few people in the story and it was a bit hard for me to keep track of them all).  Everything blended together very nicely for me...the mystery didn't overwhelm, the medical aspect didn't overwhelm either.  I could have used a bit more romance as Mary and Ryan seemed to fall for each other pretty quickly, but I did like seeing the Summersby family again and the lovely interactions between them.  Overall, a delightful tale that is a bit unique filled with fun, romance, mystery and love.  4 stars

What an Earl Wants by Kasey Michaels

Jessica Linden has had a rough five years with it ending in her husbands death.  Relived, she opens up a gaming hell to save up enough funds to open an inn and live quietly, determined to never marry again and be under a mans control.  When her father, with whom she is estranged, also dies she tries to get custody of her half brother and prepares to battle his guardian, Gideon Regrave, Earl of Saltwood.  Gideon is drawn to this fiery beauty and wants to know all her secrets and allows her to remeet her brother after so many years apart...and see what a silly fop he is now.  But more important than the custody battle, which is quickly set aside, is the quest for the truth about their late fathers and who they truly were and what they truly did.  As more and more is uncovered, Jessica and Gideon realize what a dangerous society they could be revealing.  Doing all they can to stay ahead of the game, they take measures to ensure the safety of all those possibly involved.  It quickly becomes clear, though, that this mysterious society is still alive and strong and still as dangerous as ever.  And what of the passion that burns between Jessica and Gideon?  Will Jessica be able to trust her life to another man and find happiness?

This is a book you want to sit down and just read without a lot of interruptions as there is so much information being given throughout the story.  I felt a little lost in the beginning as Jessica and Gideon meet right away and get right to the heart of the mystery aspect regarding the Society and there were a lot of names and places to sort through.  But I kept going, mainly because I loved the chemistry between our couple and I wanted to know all the secrets that I knew were going to come and with having read Kasey Michaels before, I knew that the twists would be coming and I was right.  As more and more is revealed about the Society, through some great secondary characters like the dowager Countess (she is an absolute hoot!), you are drawn deeper into a dark, twisted Society.  I really enjoyed watching Jessica and Gideons relationship grow from an almost protective attraction to a deep lasting love.  There is no major misunderstandings or mishaps...Jessica stands up for her feelings and Gideon respects that without being overbearing.  Jessica is strong, smart, brave and has a good sense of humor and is paired nicely with the protective, caring Gideon.  Gideon and his family, two brothers and a sister, may flaunt their scandalous past but when it comes to those they love, they are serious.  The mystery aspect surrounding the Society in this story is tied up but new threads are opened that will continue on in the next books and I'm anxious to see where they will lead.  So even though I felt a bit lost at times with all the information being revealed, once I was able to settle in and just read without my kids around, I really found myself sucked in and enjoying the tale.  Overall, a fast, twisting story with a smoldering romance that will leave you ready for more.  4 stars

Two Sinful Secrets by Laurel McKee

Lady Sophia Huntington has always been a bit of a black sheep to her proper family.  She likes to have fun and not bow to the rules of society all the time and she elopes with a man that causes her family to shun her.  With his passing, she is in dire needs of funds and having always been good at cards, she gambles to earn herself some money.  She wins a rather large amount from an unsavory gentleman and refuses his advances and heads to Paris to begin anew.  Sophia befriends a lady that is opening a gambling den and she sees herself happy here until a man from her past comes into the establishment.  Dominic St. Claire has never forgotten the smoldering kiss he shared one night with a masked lady and is stunned to finally stumble upon her in Paris.  The passion stills burns bright between them but their is an ancient family history between the Huntington and St. Claire's that makes Dominic hesitant to form a bond with Sophia, to be a part of the family that caused so much pain to his.  And when the unsavory gentleman reappears and starts causing trouble, will the solution that Dominic and Sophia come up with be enough to stop him and stifle the family history?

I really enjoyed this book.  I enjoyed how Sophia was good at cards and had no problem gambling to get funds for herself and refused to sell her body when the offer was presented.  She is quiet yet bold and full of determination to protect those she loves.  Her estrangement from her family causes her quite a bit of pain and I thought how that situation was handled was a change of pace that what I expected to happen.  Dominic is charming and fun and also determined to protect his family, especially from the Huntingtons so the feelings he starts to feel for Sophia cause him to reevaluate what he knows.  Dominic knows he belongs with his family and Sophia just wants a place to belong and she seems to finally find that with Dominic.  The addition on the unsavory man adds a bit of drama and helps force true feelings to be revealed.  I really adore the St. Claire family with their warmth, love and laughter and I loved seeing more of the theater aspect.  Overall, a wonderful addition to what is shaping up to be a smoking hot, fun series!  Recommended for fans of unique heroines, brooding, dashing heroes woven together with smoldering passion, a dash of intrigue, a strong family bond and a delightful, sinful romance.  4 stars

Devil in the Making by Victoria Vane

Every devil has a beginning...and having read the previous DeVere titles by Victoria Vane there is no more charming of a devil than Ludovic, Viscount DeVere and in this short little tale we get a wonderful glimpse of what shaped Ludovic into the man he became.  He is at school with his two friends, Ned and the newly introduced Simon, when his behavior gets them into trouble yet again.  Thinking they will teach their teacher a lesson, Ludovic creates an idea that involves a lion...and is sure to make you laugh with the ridiculousness of it!  Loved it.  You get a nice sense of the bond these three friends have formed and I am very eager for Simon's own story now (Jewel of the East, Spring 2013).  The story even delves into the scandalous history of Ludovic and his parents.  His awful relationship with his father and his lack of a relationship with his mother who left him when he was a child.  It really makes you appreciate and see how Ludovic came to his vices and way of life and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this glimpse of the past.

You should note, as Ms Vane states, this is not a romance but there is some minor heated moments with the lion trainer.  And even in this short tale, approximately 60 pages, you can see the attention to detail of the Georgian period that Ms Vane pours into her lovely writing.  If you have never read anything by Victoria Vane, this is a great place to start as I guarantee you will be eager to see how Ludovic ends up with his happily ever after.  And if you have read the previous stories, you will appreciate this glance into the mind of how the devil came to be...and even at this reckless age, you can see his compassion for others underneath the devil-may-care attitude.   4 stars

I was lucky enough to win an ARC of A Gentleman Never Tells and I really enjoyed it and Juliana Gray is now on my autobuy list.  I also read To Tempt an Irish Rogue and How to Tame a Willful Wife early and they were both new to me authors and I also enjoyed them.  I look forward to Her Highness and the Highlander even though I didn't love the first book in the series.  A couple ebooks out today are a debut from Liana LeFey, Countess So Shameless and also For Desire Alone by Jess Michaels, book two in her Mistress Matchmaker series and sure to be a steamy, good read!  Erin Knightly has Miss Mistletoe which looks to be a sweet holiday novella, can't wait!  And out next week is another ebook that I was able to read early, The Devil's Thief.  Recommended.
